Blocking

Verb

The movements of the actors onstage. Stage managers will record the actions and movements of actors in their Prompt Book. They record this information in case actors forget their staging and inform designers of any specific locations that are of importance. Sometimes blocking is written into published scripts as Stage Directions. These instructions may be by the author or original production team about how the play should be staged, including actors’ entrances and exits. Some stage directions are notes on one possible staging, others are essential to the integrity of the playwright’s vision.
